Alternative

Some professionals believe that herbal and plant supplements or vitamins can help improve the symptoms of menopause. While there is little scientific data to make any definitive recommendations, many women report relief. A recent study on phytoestrogens (naturally occurring compounds in soy, berries, wine, grains, and nuts that are similar to human estrogen) has shown they may help menopausal symptoms for women early in menopause. The 2013 results from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation suggest more study, including larger numbers of diverse women, is needed over many years to confirm the probability of improvement of hot flashes. However, it's important to note that most of the herbal and plant supplements are not regulated like drugs and their manufacturers are not required to report any problems or negative outcomes. Listed below are some of the most popular alternative treatments:

  • Black cohosh
  • Red clover
  • Evening primrose
